Team is important for growth, but leaders should realise their dreams even if the team is not around.
Many inspirational business leaders out there probably taught us the value of teamwork, and how invaluable they are to making the company’ a complete success.
I beg to differ, I believe as leaders we have a responsibility to make the company’s goals and dreams a reality, even if our team is not amazing or perhaps not even around anymore.
Every business experience peaks and valleys at every stage of growth, and people come and go at different stages. Even if you have amazing synergy with the present staff/people in the organisation, there is truly no guarantee that they would not leave us the next month or perhaps even the next day.
If we have to pin our hopes on the team to make dreams happen, to me that is a form of unrealistic expectation. The team can help to make the journey easier or even hasten the process, but it should never become the dealbreaker.
Managers or leaders who quote poor team dynamics as a cause for subpar performance, are often the ones who need to take the most or perhaps even 99.9% of the responsibility, and such reasons are telltale signs of company’s leadership gaps.
9 years of my career have taught me the value of building an ‘A-Class’ dream team, building a solid camaraderie and I fully understand this statement that, together everyone achieves more (TEAM).
But our business or even personal success or failure, should never be determined by the number of team members we have, or even the calibre of the team.
Rather that just look at these vanity metrics, I believe as a leader, our greatest responsibility is to lead by example. And that means inspiring all of the company’s stakeholders to move forward together by personal example, and ensuring that the company’s goals are achieved with or without team’s support.
The moment we accept that it is up to us to make all of our goals happen, and not dependent on some other party or some x-factor, we will begin to achieve greater personal mastery over our lives as fellow wonderers in this game of life.
